Wheatland School Community Comes Together for Mental Health Awareness

Wheatland students and families celebrated National Children’s Mental Health Day on Monday May 6th. School community members engaged in fun activities and games with their families while bringing awareness to the importance of mental health. Some of the highlights for the students were, Dunking Stigma at the Dunk Tank with some of their favorite teachers, and Taking Care of their Self at the Selfie Station with Willy the Warhawk! The event ended with a walk in honor of all those who have ever been affected by mental health issues and to reinforce to our children that their mental health matters. Several Wheatland staff members and The Lake Geneva Wellness Clinic participated in the event to support Wheatland families.

This event served as a kick-off to our mental health awareness week at school, which focused on a different theme each day. Students engaged in Mindful Monday, Talk About it Tuesday, Wellness Walk Wednesday, Thankful Thursday, and Family Friday. Students are encouraged to wear green on Friday in honor of mental health.

Emily Lynd, Wheatland’s Pupil Services Director said, “Our hope is that through these activities and an ongoing discussion about mental health, that we will be able to break down the stigma that prevents so many from accessing the early intervention and care that they need.”
